Why I Write Magic (And Why You Might Too If You’ve Ever Argued With Your Toaster)

Have you ever shouted at the universe , shaken your fist at the sky, or quietly (or not-so-quietly) begged your coffee machine to please just do this one thing right for once ? Have you ever wished—deep down—that you had a wand to wave, a spell to chant, or a dragon to sic on your internet provider? Same. That’s why I write magic. Now, let me back up a bit. I’ve been in situations where life handed me lemons, but also forgot the sugar, the water, the pitcher, and the instructions. You know the kind: where things feel wildly unfair, like the villain is clearly winning, and you're stuck with the sidekick role—but without the witty one-liners or costume budget. So, what do you do when real life is missing sparkle, fairness, and the satisfaction of a dramatic entrance? You invent a world where things can change with a spell. Where you can say the thing you wish you said. Where justice doesn’t take years and three lawyers. Where kindness is a superpower, animals talk back (someti...

Bad Decisions Make Good Stories

There’s a podcast I’m a little obsessed with . It’s all about scammers who somehow convince the rest of us to fork over our hard-earned money in exchange for… well… dreams, delusions, and in some cases, dubious investments in psychic dolphin therapy. (Okay, I made that last one up. But tell me it doesn’t sound real.) Every time I listen, I shake my head and go, “How could they fall for that?!” And then I remember. Oh yes. I too have walked the path of the gullible. Let’s rewind time to a much, much, much younger version of me. Younger Me, bless her heart, had a weakness for mystery, magic, and online auctions. This is the tale of The Haunted Ring With a Genie In It™ . I swear I’m not making this up. I stumbled across this listing: a haunted ring. With a genie. Real, ancient, probably cursed. But with powers . Powers I could unleash if I performed a SEVENTEEN STEP RITUAL. (Yes. Seventeen. Because eight steps would’ve been too easy and eighteen just felt needy.) Naturally, I bought...

The Day I Forgot the chairs, But Remembered the Wine

The Day I Forgot the chairs, But Remembered the Wine  An “About the Author” misadventure with dogs, books, and Christmas in July magic. You know what makes for a perfect day? A vineyard. Dogs. A Christmas-themed event...in July. Oh, and did I mention wine ? This past weekend, we packed up our books, our branding, and our two furry sidekicks—Blueberry (the real-life inspiration behind Pixie the magical Papillon) and Kobe (our wise, old floof and Senior Advisor to All Things)—and headed off to the Hounds of Erie Winery for their fabulous Christmas in July celebration. Why? Because Book 4 in the Magical Papillon Mysteries just launched and it happens to be titled—wait for it— Christmas in July. Clearly, fate was sending a festive wine-soaked sleigh in our direction, and we were all in. We had a booth set up among the grapevines and wagging tails, and honestly? It was an absolute blast . The Hounds of Erie team were some of the kindest, most welcoming humans you could ever ...

What’s Your Learning Style? A Tale of Audiobooks, Stubbornness, and a Few (Dozen) Failures

Let’s rewind to about a year ago when I decided to dabble in audiobooks. You know, like a casual hobby—except nothing in my life ever stays casual. I either go all in or I abandon ship before even getting my feet wet. This time, I went all in. I got myself a fancy Zoom P4 deck, a solid Samson dynamic microphone, and a whole mess of software that I initially had no idea how to use. I figured, how hard could it be? (Spoiler: very hard ). But I wasn’t worried. Why? Because I know my learning style. Some people take courses. Some people hire coaches. Some people watch endless YouTube tutorials. And then there’s me—stubbornly determined to learn everything by trial and error. I prefer to tinker, to break things, to question my life choices when I realize I recorded an entire chapter with my mic turned off. "Why don’t you just take a course?" my brother, the actual audio engineer, asked repeatedly. (This is the same brother who once set up my first microphone and watche...

Bookworms, Bring a Bigger Kindle: It’s Time to Stuff It Silly (Again)!

Dear reader, You know those magical times of year that make your heart race with anticipation, your eyes widen in wonder, and your one-click finger twitch with delight? No, I’m not talking about Christmas or the return of pumpkin spice season. I’m talking about… Stuff. Your. Kindle. Day. That’s right. It’s back. And like your favorite snack aisle at midnight, it’s dangerously loaded. I mean thousands of free romance books. Thousands. Not a typo. I checked. Twice. (Because math and I are not on speaking terms, but I had to be sure.) If you've never heard of the Stuff Your Kindle event, allow me to introduce you to your next addiction. It’s hosted by the fabulous folks at RomanceBookworms.com , and it’s like Black Friday for bookworms—but without needing to elbow anyone for a parking spot. Now listen up, friends, because I’m not just here waving pom-poms for someone else’s party. I’ve brought gifts . This time around, two of my very own book babies are participating: ✨ A P...

Even as an author - You Can’t Sit There All Day – The Muse Needs Her Agility Time

I know what the experts say. “Writers write.” “Butt in chair, fingers on keys.” “Power through the block!” Sure. Okay. I hear you. But after approximately six hours in the same chair, surviving on coffee, creative fumes, and the misguided hope that the next scene will magically write itself, I start to feel like Gollum from Lord of the Rings . Only less shiny. That’s when Blueberry enters the picture. Blueberry is my Papillon dog, my muse, and arguably the real boss of this household. She has the self-confidence of a rockstar on a reunion tour. When Blueberry decides it's time for agility practice, she does not negotiate. There are no polite suggestions. There is barking. There is trotting in place. There is staring . And there is absolutely no chance I’m going to get away with, “Five more minutes, sweetie.” I’ve learned that when Blueberry wants to move, I’d better move with her. So we go outside. We run, we leap, we weave through poles, sprint through tunnels, and some...

Why Do I Give Books Away? (Hint: It’s Not Just Because I Like You—Though I Do!)

I have a confession. You may have noticed that I give books away. A lot. It’s not because I enjoy throwing my hard work into the literary void like a parade float tossing candy to a sugar-starved crowd (though that does sound fun). No, there’s a method to my madness. A sneaky, strategic, brilliant (if I do say so myself) plan behind the generosity. But before we get to that, let’s talk about something I have waxed poetic about many times: Amazon reviews. If you’ve followed me for a while, you know I treat book reviews like they’re a rare and precious mineral. You may have even caught me dramatically swooning over a five-star review. (Or whispering sweet nothings to my laptop screen when a particularly glowing review comes in. Don't judge.) The truth is, for indie authors like me, reviews aren’t just nice—they’re survival. They tell Amazon’s mysterious algorithm that my books are worth recommending to new readers. They help readers decide if my story about a ghostly sidekic...

🎙️ My Slightly Awkward Fling with AI Audiobooks

If you're the kind of person who breaks into hives at the mention of AI, I have one gentle suggestion for you: maybe go pour yourself a cup of tea and skip this post. No hard feelings—I’ll see you next week when I’m talking about Papillon dogs or haunted attics or something wholesome like that. BUT… if you’re curious about what happens when an indie author who usually handcrafts her audiobooks like they’re artisanal sourdough decides to flirt with artificial intelligence… well, pull up a chair. It all started when KDP (that’s Kindle Direct Publishing for the uninitiated—Amazon’s indie author arm) invited me into a beta program to test their brand-new virtual audiobook creation tool. You read that right: AI voices reading your book aloud . It’s like giving your manuscript to a robot and asking it to sound dramatic, heartbroken, or mildly sarcastic. Now let me preface this by saying—I DO record my own audiobooks. I have a cozy little studio set up, microphones that cost more th...

The Writer’s Brain: A Chaotic and Sometimes Furry Inspiration Machine

I once read that inspiration strikes like lightning. That’s a lie. At least for me. Inspiration sneaks up on me like a cat deciding whether to knock over a glass of water. It circles, it considers, it waits until I’m in the shower with no access to a notebook and then it pounces. So where does my inspiration come from? Well, buckle up, because it’s a weird and wonderful mix. First, there’s nature. And not just in a “how poetic, the whispering pines” kind of way. No, I mean nature nature . The kind where I go on my daily walks and see a squirrel making direct eye contact with me while committing crimes against a bird feeder. Or when a branch creaks ominously in the wind, and I’m instantly imagining a Victorian ghost lady pointing toward a hidden clue. Or that one time I saw a crow drop an acorn directly on a jogger’s head, and I started wondering if animals hold grudges. And speaking of animals, let’s talk about the real queen of my inspiration: my Papillon dog. My tiny, f...

Spreading Love and Mystery This Valentine’s Day 💌✨

Happy Valentine’s Day, dear readers! Today, I want to take a moment to celebrate love, connection, and the magic of storytelling that brings us together. Whether you’re spending the day with someone special, enjoying some "me-time" with a cup of tea and a cozy mystery, or just sneaking a few extra treats to your furry friends (Pixie certainly would!), I hope your day is filled with warmth and joy. Writing the Magical Papillon Mysteries series has been such a labor of love, and knowing that Sarah, Pixie, and the enchanting world of Rosewood Hollow have found a place in your hearts means the world to me. From uncovering hidden treasures in Whispers in the Attic to solving daring heists in Sapphires & Secrets and unraveling holiday murders in A Pinch of Peril , these stories are a reminder that love and mystery often go hand in hand. This Valentine’s Day, let’s celebrate the bonds we share—not just romantic love, but also the friendships, family ties, and communities that...
